A personal loan is the most flexible loan you can take: no security, few restrictions on how you use the money, and a fixed EMI for a set period. That flexibility comes at a price, though. Because the lender has no asset to fall back on, it relies entirely on your income and credit history, and interest rates vary widely from one applicant to another.

This guide covers how personal loans work, the eligibility rules lenders apply, a documents checklist for salaried and self-employed applicants, how to choose the amount and tenure, and the mistakes that most often lead to rejection.

How a personal loan works

  • Unsecured: no property, vehicle or gold is pledged.
  • Lump sum: the full amount is credited to your bank account after approval.
  • Fixed EMI: most personal loans have a fixed rate, so the EMI stays the same for the whole tenure.
  • Short to medium tenure: commonly between one and five years.
  • Any genuine purpose: medical bills, a wedding, home repairs, education, travel or paying off expensive card debt. Lenders may ask the purpose, and some uses, such as speculation, aren't allowed.

Eligibility: what lenders check

FactorWhy it matters
AgeUsually 21 years or older, with the loan ending before the lender's upper age limit
IncomeLenders set a minimum monthly income, which varies by lender and city
Employer or businessSalaried applicants at established employers, and businesses with steady ITRs, get better terms
Work stabilityTime in the current job and total experience, or years in business
Existing EMIsThe share of your income already going to EMIs limits how much more you can borrow
Credit score and historyThe single biggest factor for rate and approval

Your credit score matters most. If yours needs work, read our guide on how to improve your CIBIL score before applying.

Documents checklist

Salaried applicants

  • PAN card and Aadhaar
  • Address proof, if your current address differs from Aadhaar
  • Latest salary slips, usually three months
  • Bank statement of the salary account, usually six months
  • Employee ID or offer letter, if asked

Self-employed applicants

  • PAN card and Aadhaar
  • ITRs for the last two years, with computation of income
  • Bank statements, usually six to twelve months
  • Business proof: GST registration, shop and establishment certificate, trade licence or similar
  • Office address proof

Choosing the amount and tenure

Borrow what you need, not the maximum you are offered. A shorter tenure means a higher EMI but much less interest. As an illustration, for ₹3,00,000 at 14% per year (an example rate):

TenureMonthly EMITotal interest
2 years₹14,404₹45,693
3 years₹10,253₹69,118

Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay comfortably every month, even in a month with unexpected expenses. Check your numbers on the EMI calculator.

The real cost: look beyond the interest rate

  • Processing fee: a percentage of the loan plus GST, usually deducted from the amount you receive.
  • Prepayment and foreclosure charges: common on fixed-rate personal loans. Check them if you might close the loan early.
  • Late payment charges and cheque or mandate bounce charges.
  • Optional insurance. Ask whether any cover added to the loan is optional.

The Key Fact Statement shows the annual percentage rate (APR), which includes these fees. To compare offers properly, read our guide on how to compare personal loan offers.

Step-by-step: applying for a personal loan

  1. Check your credit report and fix any errors first.
  2. Work out how much you need and what EMI you can afford.
  3. Collect your documents.
  4. Apply to one or two lenders that suit your profile, rather than many at once.
  5. Compare the sanction letters and Key Fact Statements.
  6. Sign the agreement and set up the EMI mandate; the money is credited to your account.

Common reasons personal loans get rejected

  • Low credit score, or recent missed EMIs or card payments
  • Too many existing EMIs compared with income
  • Several loan applications in a short time
  • Income below the lender's minimum, or income that can't be verified
  • Mismatched details: name, date of birth or address differing between documents
  • Frequent job changes or a very new business

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan with a low credit score?

It is harder, and the rate is usually higher. Improving your score first, adding a co-applicant, or choosing a secured option such as a car loan top-up may work better.

Can self-employed people get personal loans?

Yes. Lenders rely on ITRs and bank statements instead of salary slips, so filing returns regularly makes a big difference.

Is it better to take a personal loan or use a credit card?

For larger amounts you'll repay over months or years, a personal loan is usually much cheaper than carrying a revolving credit card balance.
